Immigration Assistant/Paralegal I Responsibilities: Prepare immigration cases as assigned by manager for submittal to the appropriate government agency. Work closely with manager to manage cases and to meet monthly filing goals. Understand the procedures and documentation required for cases to be filed successfully and following BAL’s service standards. Work with clients to gather the necessary information and documentation in a timely manner. Prepare forms according to information received from clients. Prepare letters and other documents on behalf of the employer/client. Finalize documents after review by Practice Manager, Team Manager and/or Attorney. Ensure all deadlines are met. Provide information and assistance to clients regarding legal procedures (NOT legal advice). Update database(s) and utilize case preparation/management tools effectively and efficiently. Monitor status of all filed applications and petitions. Run reports to assist in managing own caseload. Works with clients to obtain documents and information necessary to prepare applications. Drafts support statements and organizes documentations for filling. Files and monitors applications and petitions with appropriate government agencies. Performs research to obtain information such as background on a company or industry, current wages, processing procedures, stand processing times, etc. Initiates contact with government officials to obtain necessary information to alert supervising attorney of potential delays or possible problems in the processing of an application.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate a plus. Bachelor’s Degree specializing in English Language, Journalism, Communication, etc. a plus. Experience working in an office setting preferred. Superb organizational skills. Ability to follow instructions and take action independently. Ability to manage cases and work within strict timelines. Excellent English language skills, both verbal and written. Ability to proofread and edit one’s own work product. Good general computer knowledge and typing skills, including word-processing, email, and forms software. Excellent client customer service and interpersonal skills. Professional, respectful attitude towards all coworkers. Ability to receive and analyze information. Ability to judge appropriate levels of information shared with clients. Ability to share information with office members. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Get it together and have a heart. Quit expecting people to worship the ground associate attorneys walk on. Also the free bagels on Thursdays are nice but come on.

Pros : Your coworkers who are working in the trenches with you are genuinely good people and look out for each other.
Cons : Associate attorneys lack managerial training and are only focused on the number of cases done per day regardless of how many cases (160+) you are working on and how burnt out you are becoming. Training is mediocre at best, obviously it makes it appear a great place to work. A word of guidance to anyone considering this position: if they’re hiring in December you will get thrown in at their most busy time of year and likely be let go after it.
