Statewide Advocacy, Outreach and Policy Director Duties: Lead, coordinate and support legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the Coalition, with a particular focus on legislation intended to fund civil legal aid programs and legislation to create/improve remedies that are available to legal aid clients. Mentor, educate and assist legal aid staff attorneys. Identify and/or create statewide funding initiatives that support legal aid programming. Collaborate with other community stakeholders to develop legal aid programming that responds to the actual needs of low-income Nevadans. Coordinate and collaborate with legal aid providers, the Nevada Access to Justice Commission and the Nevada Bar Foundation to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the manner in which legal aid is delivered and propose policies to improve the same. Attend and play a significant role in statewide committees, task forces, and commissions. Develop and foster relationships with community leaders, legislators and members of the media. Coordinate education and advocacy efforts with legal aid providers, human services groups, government agencies, and other community groups. Advance media and messaging efforts by developing and sharing success stories, collecting and sharing data regarding the delivery of legal services, and producing articles/information for legal publications, social media outlets, blogs and other communications. Develop community education programs to educate the public about the availability of civil legal aid and educate policy makers about the need to cultivate legal aid resources. Propose solutions to provide legal aid to under-served populations.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: A bachelorâ€™s degree in a relevant area of study and, preferably, an advanced degree such as a JD Degree or masterâ€™s degree. 2+ years of experience in policy advocacy with a particular focus on legislative advocacy. A demonstrated desire to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, immigrants and individuals living in poverty. Experience working for or with legal aid organizations. Education or experience in non-profit management. A track record of success in advocating for policy change on behalf of individuals living in poverty. Excellent research, analysis, and writing skills. Strong public speaking skills. The ability to develop and lead new and existing projects.
