Paralegal Duties: To conduct legal and factual patent information research, data compilation and review and/or initial analysis of documents as directed by attorneys. Serve as the primary authority to provide information protection and records management as it pertains to the patent department. Provide information regarding changes to laws and regulations pertaining to the Animal Health industry for patents to be in compliance. Will actively contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of our products to our patients and customers. With minimal supervision, conduct the collection, organization and analysis of information necessary to support business needs, including: litigation, assignments, declarations, consulting agreements, or other business or patent processes. Communicates with clients and businesses regarding such request. Conduct legal and factual information research and data compilation for prior art and provide initial analysis, interpretation or inferences from research findings and communicate as appropriate and as directed by attorneys area of patent law. Provide paralegal assistance to counsel and/or other administrative agencies involved in the company patent litigation cases, administrative and/or patent matters. Take an active role in planning and participate in patent meeting discussions, and assist attorneys in the preparation of consulting agreements, confidential disclosure agreements and other administrative agreements for company entities, as assigned. With minimal supervision, prepare and conduct or assist with presentations on various patent presentations and/or related topics for internal staff. Under the supervision of the Senior Patent Paralegal, manage/lead inter-or-intra-departmental patent projects and serve as a resource for training and development of internal staff. Holds responsibility for compliance program related to patent information protection and patent records retention. Responsible for the coordination of local Records Retention days for the patent department as scheduled company wide.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree, Associates Degree or a Patent Paralegal Certificate at an accredited institution. 4+ years relevant experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities required. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. Working knowledge of legal research principles, methods, techniques, and resources. Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities: Functional knowledge of patent law and legal regulations including international requirements; knowledge and familiarity with various court systems, patent offices and filing requirements including those for national stage. High level of proficiency with technology including Microsoft Office, Adobe, USPTO electronic filing system; Derwent and other patent databases; and patent search capabilities for prior art. Good Communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment. Track and understand implications of changes to national patent laws and processes for filing, and assist in incorporating relevant changes in Company processes without loss of patent or priority rights; ability to guarantee continuity of Patent procedures.
