ProfileIntellectual Property Paralegal - The candidate reporting to the Chief IP Counsel, responsible for supporting all areas of IP. The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded team player with a strong work ethic. The IP Paralegal is a patent and trademark specialist who works with the IP attorneys to establish and execute IP processes for the filing, prosecution, maintenance, clearance, enforcement, and defense of company’s IP rights worldwide. The position includes such responsibilities as creating and improving IP-related processes, gathering data to support patent and trademark applications, conducting trademark and patent clearance searches, documenting IP activity, and tracking IP portfolio metrics. Although the position primarily supports two in-house IP attorneys, the paralegal may also, from time to time, provide support to other members of the legal team. Assist the IP team with the creation and execution of global trademark and patent processes. Maintain an IP case management system, including a docketing system, electronic document management system, and limited hard copy files. Review marketing material for potential trademark and marketing law risks; perform and analyze trademark and patent searches; conduct online searches to identify potential infringers or misuse of company’s IP rights; and assist the IP team with IP disputes and IP-related agreements. Review communications from domestic and foreign counsel, update docket accordingly, and record relevant documents. Help to monitor IP spend; track and report on IP activity and related IP performance metrics; and assist in developing IP reports and presentations. Assist with training company employees on IP processes and best practices. Correspond with outside counsel with regard to completion of some of the above tasks. Process IP invoices and outside counsel’s compliance with company practice and billing guidelines. Harvest invention disclosure forms and ensure completeness of information; obtain signatures on assignments, declarations, and other documents; and compile evidence needed to support patent and trademark applications and renewals. Manage the patent annuity payment system and the external idea submission system.
Qualification and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Should have 2+ years of IP law experience in a law firm or corporation. Paralegal certificate a plus. Should have excellent written and oral communication skills, client relationship skills, and ability to interact with engineers, brand and products managers, lawyers, and executives at all levels. Must have docketing experience. Should have proficient computer skills, including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook, and search software (experience with IP Manager docketing software or CPI annuity software a plus). Must have strong organizational skills and ability to generate new organizational tools and procedures where none have existed before.
