Spring General Law Clerk The intern will be supporting attorneys in litigation in the areas of workers’ rights, immigrant rights, equal access to education, and other civil rights areas; conducting legal research and writing; and assisting with client-related tasks such as client interviewing and preparing for depositions. Representative sample of cases actively litigated in 2016 and 2017: Challenged employers who subjected Filipino guest workers to human trafficking, national origin discrimination, racketeering based on visa fraud, retaliation, and related common-law claims. Challenged group of inter-related companies who misclassified and exploited hundreds of Korean and Latino port truck drivers in violation of state labor law. Challenged luxury nail salon and spa that subjected Vietnamese nail salon manicurist to severe wage theft, wrongful termination, retaliation, and fraudulent transfers of assets. Challenged the State of California’s failure to provide in-language Medi-Cal documents into threshold languages and denial of benefits in violation of due process. Challenged City of Fullerton’s current “at-large elections” voting scheme, which diluted the city’s Asian American voting power in violation of the California Voting Rights Act. Numerous administrative advocacy cases, primarily before the State Labor Commissioner’s Office and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Must have strong legal research and writing skills, have prior work experience, a strong work ethic, and have demonstrated commitment to public interest work, civil rights and community empowerment. Diverse 2L and 3L candidates, including candidates contemplating applying for post graduate fellowships in the future and seeking a host organization preferred. Must have Bilingual ability in English and Mandarin, Vietnamese, Khmer, Tagalog, or Spanish are highly preferred. Bilingual ability in English and any other Asian language also preferred. Schedule Requirements: Minimum commitment of 16 hours/week for 10 weeks.
