Vice President of Litigation The candidate will directly supervise 4-7 litigation teams, contribute to the programmatic leadership of the organization, and work together with the other Litigation Vice Presidents and Senior Vice President of Programs to coordinate strategy across all twenty legal teams. Will help define the office's overall advocacy strategies and contribute to decision-making regarding management, organizational structure, and policy. Depending on the candidate's experience and areas of expertise, may also lead to specific initiatives or bodies of substantive work. Will report to the office's Senior Vice-President for Programs. Will be responsible for program and litigation leadership, staff management, external engagement, including board relations, policy advocacy, and fundraising, and organizational leadership. Serve as a member of the Program Leadership Team, which develops and refines the office's programmatic goals and objectives, as well as its strategies for achieving them through litigation, policy advocacy, and communications. Work with attorneys across the Litigation department to guide their case selection, litigation strategy, and government advocacy so as to maximize the office's impact. Work with the office's communications and Policy and Legislation Departments to develop litigation, media, and policy advocacy campaigns. Cultivate and maintain effective partnerships with clients and allied organizations. Ensure that equity, racial, and social justice considerations inform every aspect of the programmatic work. Supervise the Managing Attorneys, as well as other staff as necessary. Provide the leadership, coaching, and feedback that they need to succeed. Recruit and evaluate candidates for Managing Attorney and other program positions. Help the office achieve its goals for staff diversity, workplace equity, and inclusivity. Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive work environment that improves employee satisfaction, morale, and retention. Build a learning culture in which teams celebrate victories, learn from setbacks, and share experiences to help each other succeed. Participate in all aspects of board relations, including providing updates and supporting the board litigation approval process. In partnership with the office's communications team, educate and influence supporters and partners to achieve the programmatic and fundraising objectives. Communicate as appropriate with policymakers through various public media, written materials, and face-to-face communications in order to influence policymaking at a state, local, and/or national level as appropriate. Build the office’s brand and external profile through public speaking, thought leadership, and media relations. Work with the office Development staff to identify and cultivate major donors, develop proposals and reports for foundations, and support other fundraising efforts. Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, which works with the President and Board of Trustees to set organizational policies and strategy (including financial strategy) and drive organizational change. Build organizational culture by modeling the values of justice, partnership, inclusion, and excellence.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have a J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and a license to practice law wherever located, or the willingness to apply for and be admitted to the applicable Bar within 14 months of employment. Should have 10+ years of litigation experience, including first-chair litigation experience, and 5+ years of management experience, preferably including executive-level leadership experience. Should have broad familiarity with litigation, and with environmental law, energy law, and/or environmental justice or community lawyering, with deep expertise in one or more sub-areas of the field. Must have expertise in environmental enforcement litigation. A track record of success developing and executing campaign strategies that secure change through litigation, policy advocacy, or communications is required. Should have a network of professional relationships (e.g. relationships with NGOs, government agencies, Indian tribes, and/or grassroots organizations). Should have experience communicating effectively with and through the media and supporters.
