Deputy City Attorney II or III General and Complex Litigation Division The candidate will work in the General and Complex Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney. Significant litigation experience including writ and appellate experience is desirable for the position of Deputy Attorney II or III with placement depending on experience. May assign the selected attorney to new, additional or different duties or practice areas in litigation, administrative proceedings or transactional work. Represents the in legal matters pertaining to the company. These matters include to, providing advice to clients, writ proceedings and handling litigation and appellate matters. Performs legal research, interpret and apply laws and court decisions; prepares opinions for departments, programs and activities. Prepares and reviews legal opinions, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases and other legal documents; revise of such documents as necessary to meet legal standards. Investigate claims and complaints by or against the company; recommends action to be taken; prepares cases for hearing; represent the company in such hearings. Acts in an advisory capacity at meetings of Council, boards and commissions; advises departments on legal matters. Prepare briefs for appellant courts and administrative boards. Prepares forms of court pleadings and ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, options and permits. Represents the company in litigation brought by or against the company; prepare cases for trial, hearings and arbitration. Meets and negotiates with outside parties in matters arising out of claims, property transactions and other business.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should be Graduate of accredited school of law. Experience: DCA II – 2 years of increasingly responsible work experience comparable to a Deputy City Attorney I in the company. DCA III – 2 years of increasingly responsible work experience comparable to a Deputy City Attorney II in the company. Should be member in good standing of the California State Bar. Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin are required. Knowledge of: Municipal, state and federal laws, ordinances and codes affecting City government. Legal research methods. Public contact and community relations. Local court rules and procedures. Ability to: Interpret and apply various government codes and ordinances. Conduct research on legal problems; prepare sound legal opinions. Analyze and prepare a wide variety of legal documents. Present cases in court and administrative proceedings. Handle stressful or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy. Communicate effectively in both oral and written form with City officials, representatives of outside agencies and the public. Complete varied assignments within a narrow time frame. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
