Learning Rights Law Center Full-Time Paralegal Job Description LEARNING RIGHTS LAW CENTER Learning Rights Law Center (“LRLC”) is a nonprofit organization that provides legal services to disadvantaged students not receiving an equitable public education. LRLC focuses its efforts on the most vulnerable K-12 disadvantaged students who have learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or otherwise face discrimination. LRLC addresses the crisis in the education system through advocacy, litigation, training and community organizing. POSITION The paralegal position is a full-time job under the supervision and support of the senior staff attorneys. QUALIFICATIONS Must have a paralegal certificate from a state-approved program. Must possess strong attention to detail and good record-keeping skills. Must be well-organized. Must be a team player. Must have the ability to redirect quickly among multiple tasks on hand and the flexibility to assist multiple attorneys. Experience in federal and state civil rights litigation. Special Education knowledge a plus. Proficiency required in Excel and Word and knowledge of Outlook. Bilingual English/Spanish (both written and spoken). Paralegal experience at a nonprofit is a plus, but not required. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The Paralegal will work with Learning Rights Law Center staff attorneys to support administrative and civil litigation education cases. Specifically, the Paralegal position will have responsibilities as follows: Assist attorneys with initial client meetings and interviews. Assist attorneys in administrative hearings for special education cases: Assist with evidence production; Manage trial exhibits and documents; Schedule witnesses; Proofread; and All other support for cases that are set for trial in the administrative hearing office. Assist attorneys in civil litigation (state court – in particular Los Angeles and Ventura counties, federal district court, 9th circuit) including: Organize large volumes of documents in a timely manner for motions, summary judgment, and trial; Prepare tables of authorities for briefs; Summarize legal documents; Perform records research and legal research, including Shepardizing; Proofread; Check legal forms for accuracy; Prepare reports, correspondence, notice of settlement, declarations and form complaints; Draft legal documents, including subpoenas; Filing; and Any other support for all federal and state civil litigation cases. Track client expenses and provide billing support as needed. Supervise two legal file clerks. Other tasks and assignments as needed.
