ProfileFamily Law Unit Staff Attorney Duties: Represent low-income persons in a wide variety of family law problems, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. Handle a mixed domestic relations caseload including divorce, separate maintenance, custody, juvenile court dependency, visitation, child support, alimony contempt, legitimation, family violence protective orders, name change, birth certificate establishment, birth certificate amendment, domestication of a foreign decree, emancipation, QDROs, adoption, and temporary minor guardianship. Provide community education to low-income persons and are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations as well as and to provide support to various client organizations. Help staff a Family Law Information Center in the Fulton Superior Court.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A Georgia Bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Excellent legal writing, oral advocacy and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of family and poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons are preferred.
