External Relations Director RESPONSIBILITIES: Participate on statewide management teams regarding policy development, strategic planning, and executive management activities of DRC’s programmatic work on behalf of individuals with disabilities. Staff assigned Board of Directors’ Committees and attend DRC Board of Directors meetings as needed. Coordinate development of DRC strategic plan and annual advocacy goals and objectives Work with unit staff to develop and monitor unit budgets and assist with development of agency budget. Responsible for grants management process for multiple federal grants and State Bar grants, including application submissions and preparation of annual performance report. Performance reporting Includes coordination of narratives and data from a number of sources, editing, and finalizing for submission. Develop and respond to public and private grant opportunities. Supervise grants management and reporting staff. Develop and implement systems to accurately, effectively and efficiently capture statistical and narrative data needed for grant applications, reporting and promotional communications about DRC’s work. Serve as the primary liaison between grantors and DRC program and administrative staff. Develop and review DRC policies and procedures to ensure compliance with grant requirements. Develop, implement, promote and monitor fundraising activities, including launching new fundraising campaigns, coordinating promotion with Communications, responding to donors, and tracking outcomes. Assist Board members in fundraising activities. Provide overall direction to Disability Rights California media activities, including print and social media, with the goal of increasing Disability Rights California media presence. Coordinate with the Communications Director and other staff, as appropriate, branding, promoting, and publicizing DRC’s work. Participate in outreach activities to minority and underserved populations Directly supervises Communications Director and grants and fundraising staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the agency’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in related subjects such as communications, public relations, business, development 7 years' progressively responsible experience in administration and management of complex human services organization. Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively with a variety of organizations and individuals with diverse perspectives, including persons with disabilities, advocacy groups and the public. Ability to effectively navigate public relations channels including print, television and social media Demonstrated experience in project management, including leading organization-wide cyclical processes Demonstrated conflict resolution/team building skills. Demonstrated experience working with and providing support to boards of directors and/or similar task forces and committees. Demonstrated understanding of public policy issues regarding rights of persons with disabilities. Demonstrated experience and/or sensitivity working with persons with disabilities. Demonstrated experience and/or sensitivity working with persons from ethnically and language distinct communities. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree, such as JD Degree , MBA, or other relevant field Experience in fundraising development Able to communicate fluently and write effectively in Spanish or an Asian language; or able to communicate using American Sign Language. Familiarity and/or extensive contacts with one or more of the following: homelessness, criminal justice, substance abuse or Gay/Lesbian/Bi-Sexual/Transgender/Intersex (LGBTI) communities.
