Summer Law Student Internship The intern will help provide legal services and access to justice to low-income populations. Under the supervision of Legal Aid attorneys, law students have the opportunity to: conduct client interviews; obtain discovery and other evidence; assist attorneys in preparing for hearings and trials; write briefs and other legal memoranda; draft documents and legal pleadings, assist self-represented litigants; conduct community education and outreach presentations; draft educational materials for low-income individuals; learn about the court system in Nebraska including observing court proceedings; and work on impact issues. Law students who are senior certified have the opportunity to represent clients in court proceedings under the supervision of an attorney as set forth in the Nebraska Supreme Court rules. Will work with the Agricultural Worker Rights Program. Internship duties include collaborating with other agencies providing services to agricultural workers; and preparing educational and informational materials for agricultural workers and for the website. Under the supervision of an attorney, provide information, advice, and assist in the representation of migrant workers regarding a variety of legal issues including: The Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, wage claims, employment issues, housing issues, domestic relations issues, and benefits issues. Travel is required. Students who speak Spanish are preferred. Should be a law student with a strong commitment to public interest legal advocacy. Students are expected to work 40 hours a week for 8-10 weeks.
