Criminal Law - Prosecution
Deputy County Attorney I Duties: Review investigative reports and evidence. Prosecute cases under the Nebraska criminal, juvenile, and traffic code. Interview and prepare witnesses for various legal proceedings. Consult and review work on the preparation of cases with higher-level attorneys in order to learn departmental practices and procedures. Develop strategies and arguments in preparation for legal proceedings. Conduct hearings and present evidence concerning all stages of legal proceedings. Perform professional legal research. Draft pleadings, motions, correspondence, reports, briefs, and other legal documents as required or requested. Serve as legal counsel for smaller county departments, boards, and other county-related agencies. Attend meetings. Provide legal advice regarding decisions to be made, documents and contracts to be considered, and litigation to be brought or responded to on the county’s behalf. Draft ordinances, review contracts, prepare and review bid documents and other documents. Represent the county on routine criminal and traffic matters from preliminary arraignment to and including trials; interview witnesses and sets charges. Represent the county on routine civil and workers compensation matters or assists a higher-level attorney, which includes preparing briefs, interviewing witnesses, taking depositions, and preparing for trial. Search law books, ordinances, statutes, and other legal authority on points of law involved in the preparation of legal opinions. Prepare written opinions for review by an attorney of a higher rank. Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Graduation from an Accredited Law School with a Juris Doctor Degree. License to practice law in Nebraska.
