Hearing Officer The candidate gathers and researches patient’s medical, vocational, and cogitative skills. Attend hearings at the Office of Hearings and Appeals and advocate for the patient. Requests Medical Records from Hospitals/Offices/Physicians/Etc prior to hearing. Following up to confirm records have been received and processed. Schedules Hearings. Conducts phone calls with patients/applicants as well as SSA/OHO/ODAR. Past professional experience working in Legal Aid or as a paralegal or DDS Hearings Officer preferred. Should have significant understanding of the hearings process. Ability to apply knowledge of federal and state programs to benefit coverage for the client is required. Ability to apply standards of medical vocational determination of disability is required. Must have strong communication skills (verbal & written); demonstrated experience working with people of various educational and socioeconomic backgrounds (healthcare setting preferred), experience communicating with government caseworkers and/or attorneys. Should have strong organization skills – ability to prioritize, plan, and follow tasks through to completion without direct supervision. Computer skills, including word processing, required. 4- Year college degree required; some law school preferred or paralegal education is desired.
