Attorney Lead – Subpoena Response Team
Responsibilities: Manage the third-party subpoena lifecycle, from initial receipt through disposition, including, without limitation, negotiating with requesting parties on scope and cost-shifting; drafting motions to quash; drafting responses and objections; and discovery-related work, including litigation holds and the collection, review and production of documents associated with responding to subpoenas. Manage the Subpoena Response Team, including paralegals and/or junior attorneys, from both a substantive and administrative perspective; provide team leadership, mentoring, coaching and training. Monitor the Subpoena Response Team’s performance at both an individual and group level; ensure all members of the Team are consistently performing to the expected standards. Ownership and management of the Subpoena Response Team’s processes; monitor and evaluate the processes; identify opportunities for improvement; develop and implement improvements. Collaborate with outside counsel, Staff Counsel, other in-house attorneys and paralegals, the eDiscovery team, agency staff, IT support and vendors. Primary point of contact, and initial point of escalation, for matters relating to the subpoenas handled by the Subpoena Response Team. Support and assist other areas outside the subpoena process, including discovery/eDiscovery, Records & Information Management/Information Governance, Privacy, Government Relations and Insurance Operations.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD Degree from an ABA accredited law school. Active member in good standing of at least one state Bar. 5+ years of experience. Quick learner, self-starter, and able to work both independently and lead in a team environment. Strong background in litigation, with experience in responding to third-party subpoenas, including, without limitation, negotiating with requesting parties on scope and cost-shifting; drafting motions to quash; drafting responses and objections; and all the discovery-/eDiscovery-related work. Experience with the insurance industry in general and/or specifically, with insurance litigation preferred. Familiarity with the discovery lifecycle preferred, from litigation holds through productions; familiarity with eDiscovery technologies also preferred, including technologies used for collecting, processing, reviewing and producing documents. Strong oral and written communication skills. Highly organized, high-performing, detail-oriented, and driven to produce high-quality work. Able to think and plan strategically and to demonstrate and promote a positive work ethic. Strong leadership, professional development and business acumen skills. Experience managing a team, and working with and through others, to complete highly complex projects, including organizing and prioritizing work. Strong track record of managing multiple competing priorities with consistently high-quality results. Technically savvy; strong computer skills, especially with MS Office / O365 products and applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Skype for Business, OneDrive); able to quickly learn additional applications / technologies. Highly resourceful; creative problem-solver; “outside-the-box” thinker. Adapts well to change; has experience with revising existing processes and/or developing and implementing new processes to complement change.
