Housing Attorney The candidate will work mainly in rapidly growing border cities and rural communities where low-income tenants and homeowners face incredible challenges. Will protect the rights of low-income tenants and homeowners by preventing evictions and foreclosures, especially home equity loan foreclosures and reverse mortgages. Serve the needs of colonial homeowners to ensure they have clear title to their property. Enforce tenants' rights related to the Fair Housing Act, rights under federal housing programs, and LIHTC Program; and state law protections on landlord retaliation, repairs, late fee limitations, early lease termination. Represent individuals and families having difficulty attaining housing because of discriminatory landlord practices, including public housing, Section 8 housing voucher program denials, and other federally subsidized housing denials. Defend families faced with termination of their section 8 housing voucher. Advise and represent people and families who are facing home foreclosure sales caused by fraudulent or predatory practices. Protect homeowners and renters on the verge of losing titles or possession of manufactured homes. Defend individuals and families who face loss of homesteads in tax foreclosure lawsuits due to inability to pay property taxes. Work with tenant organizations on issues of concern to the organization related to preservation of housing, management practices, and conditions. Must be licensed to practice law in Texas, able to waive into the Texas Bar, or willing to take the next available Bar exam. Exceptions currently include attorneys working for migrant farmworker program or immigration team and licensed in another state. Should preferably have strong academic credentials and be functionally fluent in Spanish.
