Position:              Bilingual Legal Services Project Staff Attorney
Location:             Oakland, CA or New York
Reports to:          Legal Director 
Schedule:            Full-time 
Deadline:            We intend to conduct interviews in May and June in anticipation 
                             of a June or July start date.


POSITION SUMMARY    
Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people. Grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice, TLC employs a variety of community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation. TLC’s Legal Service Project (LSP) provides legal information, limited client advocacy, and know-your-rights training and materials through our English and Spanish legal helpline. The Legal Services Project Staff Attorney will provide general legal services to transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people on a range of topics including but not limited to name and gender changes, access to health care, police misconduct, immigration, protection orders and employment discrimination.  This position will also provide technical assistance to attorneys representing TGNC people throughout the country and manage our LSP pro-bono matching program. 


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide legal assistance to TGNC people in the areas of: immigration; discrimination complaints to local, state, and federal agencies; police misconduct; prison/ jail conditions; and criminal record expungements.
  • Assist with the coordination of legal education strategies, development of educational materials, and organization of community legal clinics.
  • Organize and manage LSP’s pro-bono matching program.
  • Provide technical assistance to attorneys on how to be culturally competent and represent TGNC people.
  • Support LSP manager to oversee volunteer program, including partnerships with law firms and law school programs.
  • Respond to English and Spanish helpline inquiries with appropriate legal information and resources.
  • Provide immigration-related legal counseling and support for TGNC immigrants.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Law degree and at least 2 years of experience providing direct legal services.
  • Membership in the bar of at least one state, preferably California or New York.
  • Excellent speaking and writing abilities.
  • Demonstrated history of producing the highest caliber legal work.
  • The ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences.
  • Experience with racial justice, immigrants’ rights, and/or trans justice work, especially community-based.
  • A high level of independence and initiative, creativity, and good judgment.
  • Experience working in teams with people from a variety of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • A demonstrated commitment to a broad range of social, racial, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TLC represents.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge about current TGNC immigration legal issues.
  • Experience working collaboratively with grassroots organizations.
  • Experience supervising paralegals or legal volunteers.


SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary range is competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s experience and skills. Benefits include comprehensive health (medical, dental, vision and FSA), three weeks’ vacation, and sick and family leave.
