Associate National Civil Rights Counsel The candidate will work closely with the Vice President, Civil Rights and the National Civil Rights Counsel to implement strategies to advance the League’s work on a range of civil rights issues directly related to firm’s mission to “stop the defamation of the Jewish people and secure justice and fair treatment for all. Conduct legal research and prepare letters, memoranda, op-ed articles, speeches and published articles on legal issues related to the mission of firm. Will provide specialized legal advice to Civil Rights Area Counsels and to firm regional offices; prepare and deliver presentations to lay leaders on legal topics; and assist the Vice President, Civil Rights in overseeing the preparation of amicus briefs and reports on substantive legal matters and the drafting of model legislation, testimony, and policy backgrounders. Serve as the Civil Rights team’s primary “point person” on discrimination and related civil rights issues, providing guidance across the League to staff, lay leaders, outside attorneys preparing briefs on firm behalf, and coalition partners. Prepare legal memoranda and reports for internal use by regions and firm departments. Write letters, op-ed pieces and public statements for external publication. Respond to legal inquiries from internal and external sources, including other firm staff, constituents, coalition partners, and government officials. Review, edit, and draft amicus briefs. Keep abreast of current events and legal developments in areas of interest to firm. Prepare policy background reports on new issues, including new emerging civil rights issues for national meetings of lay leadership. Advise Area Legal Counsels and provide non-routine legal advice to regional offices by gathering research, seeking expert outside counsel advice and/or obtaining archived data. Prepare and deliver CLE courses, legal presentations, briefings, and trainings to lay leaders and community organizations. Speak on behalf of firm to lawyers groups, civil rights groups, and other relevant audiences. Work closely with the VP, Civil Rights and the National Civil Rights Counsel to plan the annual “Supreme Court Review” program and the Summer Associate Research Program. Assist with oversight of interns and internship program.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have JD degree. Should have 2-5 years of directly related experience in the field of public interest law and/or civil rights. Excellent legal writing and plain English writing is required. Excellent legal research skills including knowledge of legal research databases is needed. Strong public speaking skills is must.
