Lead Patent Attorney The candidate will direct, lead, and oversee Allstate’s domestic and foreign patent activity. Will partner with leaders to support business objectives through patent strategy development and application. Informing business strategy based on landscape and competitive assessments. Providing the business with progress updates and portfolio reviews. Authoritative client counseling on patent issues including integrating patent and trade secret considerations into business plans, enterprise risk avoidance and mitigation strategies, and strategies for enhancing patent portfolio scope and strength. Oversee preparation and prosecution of patent applications. Oversee infringement monitoring and analyze enforcement opportunities. Perform patent analyses and support for litigation, manage invalidity and non-infringement opinions and provide authoritative counsel to internal clients on freedom-to-operate and trade secret issues. Provide and oversee transaction support including for technology, licensing agreements, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic alliances. Lead the patent team, ensuring high performance and fostering individual and team development. Provide work direction, coaching, performance feedback, and final review approval for the patent team. Manage and collaborate with outside counsel to efficiently manage out-sourced work. Provide budget oversight and evaluate outside counsel relationships periodically. Oversee training and recognition programs. Leverage external industry relationships to represent the company appropriately. Utilize data and analytics in work and in leading team. A JD degree and a license to practice law in Illinois or eligibility for reciprocal admission is needed. Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office is essential. Should have 10+ years of legal experience focused on complex patent work including but not limited to transactional, adverserial, preparation and prosecution of patent applications. Experience in software IP law, technical arts, strategic partnerships, and strategic patenting concepts are preferred. Experience overseeing development and maintenance of domestic and foreign patent portfolios are needed. High level organizational and project management skills to handle multiple concurrent assignments is needed. Experience gained in both private practice and in-house is ideal.
