Paralegal/Legal Assistant - Family Law The candidate acts as liaison between current and potential clients and the attorneys by maintaining continual communications via email, telephone, and in person. Follows up with clients regarding status of cases, appointments, billing, etc. Prepares routine correspondence, pleadings, discovery documents, reports, and letters, Maintains attorneys’ calendars; schedules and follows up on all appointments (i.e., courts, clients, case work, and potential clients). Responsible for ensuring timely filing with the courts and assisting attorneys in preparation for court appearances. Maintains court schedule and other case deadlines. Opens, organizes, maintains, and closes paper and electronic client files. Assists with discovery and document organization. Creates binders to organize and index all documents for a particular case. Prepares and sends billing statements monthly. Inputs timekeeper data. Performs a variety of other tasks as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have 3+ years’ relevant work experience in a professional office setting or a combination of relevant work and educational experience. Familiarity with Virginia courts and their procedures is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and document management software is essential. Typing at a level of 65 WPM is essential. Operational knowledge of standard office equipment including copier, scanner, telephone, and dictation/transcription equipment is essential. Must have understanding of legal terminology. Expert level verbal and written communication skill is essential. Must have 3-5 years of law firm and Virginia Court experience; should be well versed in supporting Family Law practice requirements; must work well with the public ; and have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Must have experience in the above practice areas plus a Paralegal Certificate (ABA-approved preferred) or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
