Counsel Responsibilities: Provide advice and counsel to group and subsidiary companies on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters. Advise on various intellectual property matters involving copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets, including managing trademark program and coordinating with outside counsel on patents. Undertake a comprehensive review of the organization’s data and privacy projects and advise on legal obligations and corporate privacy and data security goals and policies. Ensure the organization has and maintains appropriate privacy and confidentiality consents, data sharing and authorization forms, and information notices and materials. Conduct research regarding data privacy, intellectual property, and other legal issues affecting business, translating complex laws and regulations into practical advice and solutions. Provide training on legal issues to team members. Communicate effectively with staff in all areas of the company, outside counsel and other third parties and their counsel. Manage efficient use of outside counsel. Anticipate legal needs and proactively recommend solutions for meeting these needs. Maintain current knowledge of trends and legal issues as they relate to business.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD degree from an ABA accredited law school required. 5+ years of legal experience in a law firm or corporate legal department One or more of the following privacy certifications is preferred: CIPP/US Certified Information Privacy Professional. CIPM Certified Information Privacy Manager. Fellow of Information Privacy. Demonstrated competency in intellectual property law and/or student data privacy preferred. Significant experience in partnering with business clients and cross-functional teams and leading strategic projects and initiatives. A current license or the ability to become licensed to practice law in the state of Iowa is required. Experience working in a corporate legal department is preferred. Nonprofit law experience also preferred. Highly self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong analytical, drafting, and negotiation skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills and judgment. Flexible and able to think creatively to find practical solutions to complex issues. Organized and detail oriented. Demonstrated experience managing multiple matters and projects, meeting deadlines and working effectively individually and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, challenging environment. Sophisticated interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong internal relationships, influence others, and work as part of cross-functional teams and in partnership with team members at all levels of the organization. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding corporate information.
