Public Instruction, Department of Attorney Duties: The candidate will performing legal research and writing projects, including preparing legal memoranda; representing the department before other administrative agencies and, when necessary, in court; collaborating with staff to draft, review, negotiate, and manage legal agreements and contracts; assist the Wisconsin Department of Justice in defending the department in state and federal court; review department policies and practices to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; research and draft final agency decisions and orders; coordinate with department staff to ensure the timely response to public records requests; provide training to department staff on a variety of legal topics; and provide general legal advice and counsel to the department.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: The candidate should have must have experience: Conducting legal research, discovery and preparing legal opinions; Negotiating contracts, settlement agreements or Memorandums of Understanding; Appearing before state or federal administrative tribunals or court; Drafting legal documents (e.g., pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests, etc.). Should have experience reviewing and drafting proposed legislation, regulations or guidance; responding to public records requests. Licensure or eligibility for licensure to practice law in the State of Wisconsin is required.
