Consumer Justice Attorney
Duties: Learn and advocate for the diverse legal needs of communities affected by systemic and structural inequities in the Bay Area to reduce homelessness, enhance stability and address social injustice. Represent low-income consumers in both defensive and affirmative consumer litigation. Staff community-based clinics to provide assistance with consumer protection issues, including unfair or abusive debt collection and credit reporting, student loan debt, and foreclosure. Collaborate with the local and national consumer justice community. Receive supervision, support, and training from experienced Consumer Justice team attorneys who are statewide experts in their field.
Learn and assist with the diverse legal needs of underserved and vulnerable communities in the Bay Area. Provide workshops and technical assistance to community partners and client communities on consumer rights. Develop relationships and engage in collaboration with a range of public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, courts, and community-based organizations, to ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing BayLegal's client community. Work closely with BayLegal's development, grants and contracts, and communications team to promote BayLegal's mission and resource development; and Engage in other tasks and projects that further BayLegal's operations as a non-profit



Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: The candidate should have experience and commitment to being organized, managing a diversity of activities, identifying questions, engaging in research and follow-through, and calendaring and meeting critical deadlinesFamiliarity with civil litigation in California state courts preferred. Language fluency and proficiency in language are regularly used in services to our client community (particularly Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin) preferred (wage differential available upon passing the test for fluency and written proficiency). Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to be detail-oriented. Commitment and demonstrated experience working collaboratively with a dynamic diverse team. Demonstrated experience and skills to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project detail.
