School-Based Civil Legal Clinic Attorney Duties: Provide advocacy to families in civil legal proceedings; Determine eligibility for representation; Conduct fact investigation, discovery, research, representation at hearings, etc. Create and maintain case filing system; Report identified clients to the Director of Social Work Services to receive case management and therapeutic services; Provide trainings and/or informational sessions on civil topics to a variety of audiences; Represent the Center at community meetings, functions etc. as needed; Recruit, train, and supervise pro bono attorneys, fellows, law clerks, and interns; Work with the Center’s Development & Communications staff, sharing client impact and/or assisting in developing grant or funding opportunities to strengthen staffing and legal services.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Requires a JD Degree from an accredited law school and admission to the Illinois Bar. Knowledge of the principles of civil practice; Demonstrated housing and family law experience preferred; Skill in litigation and trial advocacy; Skill in conducting legal research; Skill in legal writing including legal briefs and memos; Skill in analytical problem solving; Skill in decision making in adversarial circumstances; Outstanding communications skills, written and oral; Ability to multitask while maintaining vigilant attention to details; Affinity for legal aid work and commitment to racial and social justice; Understanding of and commitment to the Moran Center’s work and mission; Comfort with ambiguity and a good sense of humor; and Ability to work well in a fast-paced, highly collaborative and interactive office.
