Senior Attorney Duties: Manages uninsured litigation and pre-litigation matters in a variety of cases involving the airlines and supervises paralegals and outside counsel handling the same. Coordinates with other in-house lawyers handling litigation matters to establish common expectations with law firms, realize economies, set finance reserves, and keep the VP Legal & General Counsel and other executives abreast of legal exposure. Works with paralegals to issue litigation holds, to respond to discovery requests, and to handle other litigation-related tasks. Drafts, reviews, and edits pleadings and discovery requests in litigation and arbitration matters. May be called upon to take or defend depositions, to represent Airlines and Air at arbitration hearings, and/or appear in court. Prepares reports to VP Legal & General Counsel and other executives on pending litigation, arbitration, and other legal disputes. Conducts legal research and analysis and investigates matters bearing on litigation matters. Advises and counsels on FOIA and Public Records Act matters. Advises and counsels on responses to commercial and law enforcement subpoenas directed to entities. Advises and counsels business partners in consumer and third party fraud investigations and passenger disputes. Provides legal advice and counseling during times of potential internal or public relations crises. Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts, letter agreements, and settlement agreements related to litigation and pre-litigation legal disputes. Coordinates with Risk Management department on insured litigation and pre-litigation matters. Manages outside legal counsel, including managing related budgets. Travels for client matters and to industry-related legal conferences.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required. JD Degree from leading law school, with strong personal academic credentials. Licensed attorney in good standing, preferably licensed in Washington State. 6+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney in a commercial, tort/product liability, or labor & employment litigation role in a law firm or government setting. A thorough familiarity with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and litigation procedure and local rules in at least one state court. Must have participated in at least one litigation or arbitration matter from inception through trial. Must understand and know how to apply rules of privilege in a corporate setting. Must have excellent fact-finding skills and be comfortable providing legal advice in ambiguous situations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Excellent delegation, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines in fast-paced environment where flexibility is key. Strong interpersonal skills. Preferred: Knowledge of the airline industry. Experience with Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and Affirmative Action Programs (AAP). Experience in the labor law field. Litigation experience in an aviation-related discipline. History of direct, frequent interaction with corporate clients.
