Assistant Public Defender I (Attorney) The candidate will handle trial and appellate cases. Reports to the Public Defender of the Office and is employed at will. Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts, as well as, identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients.
Qualification and Experience
A Virginia State Bar admission is required. Knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence is required along with experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications and skills in keyboarding. Preferred qualifications include experience in the criminal defense of indigent clients, to include: formulating and implementing viable defense case theories, analyzing probable outcomes of cases, and demonstrated skill in arguing effectively and persuasively in a courtroom setting. Additional preferred qualifications include demonstrated experience in preparation of legal motions, and experience of Virginia appellate practice. Qualification to accept appointment in felony and misdemeanor cases under Virginia Code 192.-163.03 is also preferred. Must have the ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively, as well as, master subject matter, and prepare cases thoroughly. The ability to learn and accept constructive criticism is important along with the ability to respond quickly and effectively in addressing issues and questions is required. The qualified applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized.
