ProfileAttorney - Criminal The candidate appears in court, attends scheduled hearings, trials, and preliminary hearings. Presents oral argument as appropriate. Researches facts and analyzes legal issues using both computerized and printed legal research tools. Composes motions, briefs, correspondence and other legal documents. Prepares cases for trial by interviewing witnesses, visiting crime scenes and other locations, reviewing evidence on- and off-site. Interacts with criminal defendants charged with heinous acts, including murder, sexual assault, child molestation, and kidnap. Discusses and presents analysis of legal issues to clients, court personnel and related individuals. Communicates in person and by phone with clients, prosecutors, co-workers, supervisors and others. Travels to outlying courts, jails and correctional facilities to effectively represent clients. Attends Continuing Education seminars. May be assigned to other units in department. Must have Doctor of Jurisprudence or Doctor of Law degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school and 2 years of experience practicing criminal law. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license. Should be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at time of application. Experience practicing law in a public defender office desired. Should preferably have 3 years of experience practicing criminal law. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills desired.
