Employment with Yavapai County Government is contingent upon successfully passing a criminal background check and verification of work history, academic credentials, licenses and certifications, as applicable. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Initiates and engages criminal prosecution, and/or initiates, engages, and defends civil litigation, which include investigating facts, analyzing facts, applying legal knowledge, planning trial strategy, consulting with parties and expert and lay witnesses, and negotiating and resolving litigation prior to trial. Conducts criminal and civil trials on behalf of county and represent county at administrative and other hearings. (50%) Advises county departments as clients and various law enforcement agencies on civil and criminal matters. (20%) Performs legal research and drafts, reviews and prepares legal documents including motions, petitions, opinions and demands. (15%) Drafts, reviews and prepares appeals and post-conviction relief proceedings. (10%) Performs other duties as assigned. (5%) Expectations: 1. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of county, state and federal law, rules of evidence, criminal and/or civil rules of procedure, administrative rules, rules of court, and office policy and procedure. 2. Exercises increased authority in decision?making and discretion when advising clients, negotiating and resolving litigation, and in determine alternative courses of action. 3. Drafts organized legal documents, using proper punctuation and grammar. 4. Demonstrates ability to handle large volume of cases and/or clients, meet deadlines and prepare for meetings, court proceedings, hearings and trials, demonstrates a thorough knowledge of specific areas of criminal and/or civil areas of practice. 5. Consistently maintains effective working relationships with civil clients, county departments, law enforcement representatives, victims, other employees, the courts, and the public. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: A minimum of four (4) years of relevant legal experience Education: Graduation from an accredited law school, admission to the State Bar of Arizona. Preferences: Experience in areas such as providing legal advice to county governments, departments and officials, zoning law, employment law, election law, bankruptcy, asset forfeiture or similar experience. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Interpersonal Skills: Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to analyze and organize factual information and make persuasive legal arguments. Other Skills: Ability to remain in sitting position for extended periods of time.
