Deputy Borough Chief In Charge of Trials The candidate under the general supervision of the Borough Chief, manages and supervises the Boroughâ€™s trial calendar. Duties, as delegated by the Borough Chief, may include: oversight of the Boroughâ€™s trial attorneys and support professionals; training and supervision of the Boroughâ€™s trial attorneys and support professionals; supervising the trial part calendar and conferencing cases for settlement; assigning cases to the Boroughâ€™s attorneys and support staff for trial and/or trial preparation; updating the Borough Chief, Division Chief, Central Deputy Chiefs, Comptrollerâ€™s office, and others on the status of cases on trial; development and implementation of Borough policies and procedures; organization, attendance, and participation at regular meetings with the Boroughâ€™s personnel; attendance and participation at meetings with the Divisionâ€™s management; reviewing and editing case analyses, jury charges, verdict sheets, motions in limine, and trial memoranda; assisting the Divisionâ€™s senior negotiator in settling Borough matters; interfacing with agencies; interfacing with court personnel; maintaining Borough performance statistics; oversight of the Boroughâ€™s retention of expert witnesses; review and approval of pre-encumbrances prepared by the Borough.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have substantial legal experience, including substantial experience in personal injury trials; demonstrated exceptional managerial and supervisory abilities; strong analytical skills and a solid knowledge of municipal tort law, the CPLR, and evidentiary issues; strong negotiation skills; familiarity with settlement values of various personal injuries; excellent judgment; excellent interpersonal skills; facile with electronic legal and general research tools, and electronic calendaring and management programs.
