Patient Financial Counselor/Case Manager Duties: Navigating patients through the financial component of cancer care. Meets with patients early in admission process to assess financial needs and facilitate process for unmet needs. Works closely with the patient estimates to decide best avenue for securing payment or charity. Follows through with assistance until the applications are approved or denied. Keeps up-to–date with social assistance programs and co-pay assistance foundations. Works directly with billing office in collections. Assists with guiding patients through charity process and is responsible for compiling necessary information so charity application can be accepted or denied. Must develop rapport and trust with the patients and families. Other duties as assigned. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Must maintain a professional attitude at all times. Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings and completes annual educational requirements attends all other meetings as required. Assists with ordering free and replacement. Puts together estimates for treatments to be used for assistance and charity.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: AA or equivalent from a two year college or technical school; Behavioral science, human relations, medical terminology business, paralegal courses helpful. Knowledge of the collection practices and an understanding of the Fair Debt and Collection Act would be helpful. 2 years of medical staff office work can be substituted for education requirement. Strong computer skills a must. Strong communication skills needed. The ability to interpret legal documents would be helpful. Sensitivity, maturity and ability to communicate clearly and concisely is a must. Ability to recognize financial needs whether it is through lack of insurance, being underinsured, large co-pays or poor management of resources. Requires sensitive conversations about how the treatment of cancer may impact a patient’s lifestyle. Obtaining knowledge of the various social programs, Medicaid, Medicare, private insurances, charity and drug assistance programs would be key to helping these patients. The ability to hold a patient accountable for their portions by developing financial agreements would also be a major responsibility. Working closely with other disciplines within the institute, especially pharmacy and social worker.
