Legislative Attorney/Advocate
Duties: Research, analyze, and draft state policy and budget proposals and amendments, advocacy documents and related materials, lobby public officials in support or opposition to legislative and budget proposals, prepare and deliver testimony; negotiate with legislators, staff and other advocates. Assist in planning overall legislative priorities and devising pro-active and reactive strategies to achieve legislative goals. Participate as the representative in coalitions and other stakeholder groups and committees. Work with affiliate staff, responding to requests, participating in issue team meetings, and preparing written summaries of the work. Serve as a spokesperson on issues in the media and at public events.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (for Legislative Advocate) or JD Degree (for Legislative Attorney). Law degree and legal experience strongly preferred. 2+ years of relevant experience. Strong state legislative experience or experience working on legislative matters, preferably involving civil rights or civil liberties and preferably in Sacramento; Strong strategic and analytic skills; Ability to analyze and articulate legal concepts and communicate them to a variety of audiences; Excellent writing skills and skills as an articulate public advocate; Demonstrated ability to work effectively in large coalitions and with diverse staff, activists, and public officials; and Strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, optimism, and a sense of humor. Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of issues relating to civil liberties and civil rights.
