ProfileAssistant Public Defender I / Attorney Duties : Handle trial and appellate cases. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. Duties may also include researching, writing and arguing appeals before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia. The APD I is responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and assuring legal compliance.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification : The candidate should have Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, as well as, the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized. Must have the basic knowledge of criminal law, criminal defense procedures, court practices and procedures, legal codes and precedents, client file maintenance, internet search methods, and Virginia Criminal Law. Should also have basic familiarization with Constitutional Law & Standards of Practice for Indigent Defense Representation.
Preferred Qualifications : Prior experience in representing indigent defendants in a Public Defender Office or as a Court Appointed attorney, or internship doing the same is preferred. Applicants that are VIDC certified are preferred.
