Merriam Law Firm is seeking a tax defense/controversy attorney to join our firm.
We represent and defend clients who have tax problems ranging from an IRS or Colorado examination/audit to unpaid income/employment taxes. You will work closely with the firm’s senior attorneys on the federal, state, and local levels, including matters related to: examinations, appeals, Tax Court litigation; voluntary disclosures, offshore asset compliance, and criminal tax investigations; and tax collection issues resulting from unfiled returns and unpaid tax liabilities, resulting in tax liens, levies, and seizures.
-Communicate effectively with clients, and with IRS, state, and local tax agents and attorneys
-Work efficiently under the supervision of the senior attorneys
-Provide input and feedback to maintain an excellent client experience
-Interact diligently with representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state revenue agencies
-Handle evaluation, risk assessment, and counseling on various complicated tax problems
-Accurately track time spent on each client’s case
-Manage workflow, completing tasks daily, ensuring deadlines are met, and work is completed correctly
-Prepare correspondence and legal documents for the IRS and state revenue agencies
-One to three years of tax controversy or general litigation experience preferred
-A passion to advocate for and to defend clients with federal, state, local tax problems
-Active law license in the state of Colorado
-LLM in Taxation
-Competency in problem-solving
-Exceptional written and verbal communication and negotiation skills
-Superior organization skills and dedication to completing projects in a timely manner
-Ability to work effectively, efficiently, and collaboratively with other firm members
-Strong technical abilities and knowledge of Internal Revenue Code
-Proficiency in Adobe and MS Office
-Strive for personal improvement and a willingness to accept constructive criticism
