Profile

Director, Racial Justice Program [RJP-01], Racial Justice Program
The candidate will report directly to the Director of the Trone Center for Justice and Equality, is responsible for leading a program staff based in New York that includes a full-time deputy director, litigators, paralegals, legal assistants, and one or more legal fellows. Will collaborate with the Center Director to determine the firm’s racial justice priorities and ensure that the Program’s resources are used effectively in support of these priorities. Establish and implement a national strategy for the firm to address the issues related to racial justice, including Native American rights, through an integrated program of advocacy, research, public education and litigation . Develop and manage the Program’s litigation docket, which is primarily focused on trials and direct appeals. Coordinate with other parts of the firm to develop and implement the firm’s non-litigation advocacy relating to racial justice work. Work with coalition partners in formulating strategies to combat racial discrimination. Supervise Program staff, including staff attorneys. Manage the Program’s budget. Advise and support firm state affiliates working on racial justice issues in their own jurisdictions. Act as a public spokesperson for the firm on racial justice issues. Work with the firm’s Development Department to communicate the Program’s goals and successes to foundation and individual donors and prospects. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office; using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance. Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have Juris Doctorate degree. 10+ years of experience is strongly preferred. Significantly more experience are encouraged to apply. Must be admitted to the Bar of another state and agree to become admitted to the New York Bar within one year of hire. Significant racial justice and racial discrimination litigation experience is essential. Must have experience, either through personal connection and history or through work experience, with minority communities harmed by racial discrimination. Experience in managing a team and strong commitment to team-building and positive organizational culture, including commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts is essential. Excellent legal research, writing, verbal communication, and community outreach skills is essential. Must have a strong track record in leadership and driving a vision within a complex and multi-faceted department.
