Staff Attorney, Matrimonial/ Economic Justice Project Responsibilities: Provides comprehensive legal services to clients who are victims of crime, including: information and referrals; personal advocacy and accompaniment; emotional support and safety services; and criminal/civil justice assistance and advocacy. Represents victims of domestic violence in Family and Supreme Court primarily in cases involving: child support, spousal support, uncontested and contested matrimonial matters, and enforcement or modification actions. Occasional representation in cases involving: orders of protection, custody, and visitation issues.. Oversee Office of Victim Services crime victim compensation claims assistance provided by project assistants. Collaborates with other domestic violence advocates practicing in the field of matrimonial and family law. Advocates for clients in legal and non-legal forums outside of their matrimonial or family court cases. Attends and participates in interagency conferences and legal/ bar association committee meetings to keep abreast of developments in the areas of pro bono, domestic violence, and matrimonial law. Refer clients to the appropriate in-house and external services and track the status of internal and external referrals. Accept referrals of potential clients from the New York State Crime Victims Legal Network (CVLN), screen their cases for eligibility for direct representation, and provide limited scope or full legal representation, as appropriate. Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with the CVLN to ensure victims are receiving the most comprehensive response. Within the first year of their hiring, complete 15 hours of training on holistic Victim Law, including the neuroscience of trauma and its implications for legal representation of crime victims. Attend CVLN meetings and collect, maintain, and report data and statistics, as needed, to CVLN administrators. Provide information regarding and assistance in completing Office of Victim Services crime victim compensation applications. Maintain accurate and updated records of current and potential clients in the agency’s electronic database. Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor compliant with requirements of OVS grants.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: JD degree. Admission to the New York State Bar. 2-4 years' legal experience. Strong computer skills. Good public speaking skills. Ability to work independently. Strong research and writing skills. Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Knowledge of the dynamics of gender-based oppression and a strong motivation to combat gender-based violence.
