Patent Attorney
Duties: Prepares, files and prosecutes patent applications as needed to support PTC’s R&D goals (Agent/Attorney). May also file and prosecute trademark applications to support PTC’s Commercial and Marketing goals (Attorney). Interacts cross-functionally to gather and analyze information necessary to prepare patent applications (Agent/Attorney) or trademark applications (Attorney); may attend internal meetings with key stakeholders to obtain subject matter background. Provides direction and support to the IP Team to ensure patentability requirements for applications drafted are met; contributes expertise to IP Team and R&D discussions to develop and execute strategy for patent preparation and filing efforts aligned with the strategic timing of PTC’s research organization. Reviews examination communications from US and ex-US patent offices; reviews draft responses provided by external IP counsel and consults within the IP Team as needed to provide direction or instructions to external counsel regarding potential responses. Supports patent-related due diligence for collaborations and licensing. Assists in review of technical materials before disclosure. Performs additional duties as requested or required.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: BS/MS degree in molecular or cell biology, biochemistry, virology or immunology (Agent/Attorney); JD degree (Attorney). 3-6 years of demonstrated experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications related to biotechnology focused on small and large molecules, gene therapy, or gene editing. Candidates with substantial relevant research experience or experience in a drug discovery role within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related environment are desired; experience with DNA/RNA-based small/large molecule or gene therapy is preferred. Special knowledge or skills required: Must be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (Agent/Attorney); admitted to at least one state bar (Attorney). Demonstrated experience preparing, filing and prosecuting patent applications. Familiarity with trademark principles (Attorney). High degree of integrity and ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities and adhere to strict guidelines and deadlines while maintaining high attention to detail. Reliable self-starter with the ability to influence without direct authority, works independently and collaboratively when appropriate, and uses excellent verbal and written communication skills to regularly discuss issues and strategy with other team members in a fast-paced, matrixed environment. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Experience using SharePoint, ChemDraw, EFS Web and/or Adobe are preferred.
