Category 15 Miles Staff Attorney External Applicants Apply Now Current Employees Apply Now Requisition #: 18013624 Facility: SSM Health Dean Health Plan Address: 1277 Deming Way Madison, WI Employment Type: Full Time, Days Hours: 8 am-5pm Scheduled Hours Per 2 Week Pay Period: 80 Posting Date: 10/1/2018 Description Role Purpose: The Staff Attorney will report to Dean Health Plan’s (“DHP’s”) Assistant General Counsel, and will assist the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel in legal and contractual matters relating to DHP. General duties will consist of (i) review and negotiation of vendor contracts, (ii) proactive support of DHP’s contract management system, (iii) assistance with management of, and representation of DHP in, subrogation litigation, and (iv) Grievance Committee participation and occasional insurance defense. The Staff Attorney will also anticipate and mitigate legal problems within the organization as they pertain to insurance coverage and financial exposure and advise DHP business units accordingly. Responsibilities: 1. Responsible for the contract language review, strategy, negotiating and advising internal staff with respect to contracting initiatives. 2. Draft vendor contracts and other contracts as required. 3. Support DHP’s Vendor Contract and Management System (“CRMS”) and educate DHP personnel on CRMS use and requirements. 4. Functions as a key contact for persons requesting contractual information from the Assistant General Counsel and General Counsel, and provide in-depth legal analysis and advice (a) in developing proposals for negotiating contracts and (b) to finalize contractual engagements. 5. Represent DHP in subrogation litigation, acting under the guidance of Assistant General Counsel and General Counsel. 6. Performs legal research and analysis of state, federal, and case law and other rules and regulations. 7. Support in-state (WI) and out-of-state business initiatives. 8. Supports a team environment and works professionally, appropriately and collaboratively with physicians, attorneys, executives and administrators and other members of the Legal Division, DHP, Dean Medical Group, and SSM Health Care Corporation. 9. Tracks state and federal laws/regulations which may impact DHP and its subsidiaries and affiliates and regularly updates appropriate departments with regard to new legal requirements and legislation. 10. Interacts with and manages outside counsel with regard to litigation, including consultation with outside counsel regarding strategy and facts, reviewing all court/agency filings and managing discovery processes. 11. Serve as key resource to, and attend, DHP’s Grievance and Appeal Committee as required. 12. Effectively represent DHP (and/or provide key assistance) in occasional litigation of low to moderate complexity (ex. limited insurance defense). 13. Assists the Assistant General Counsel and General Counsel with all legal and contractual matters, and performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required: 1. Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and Wisconsin bar admission. 2. Minimum of 2 years of experience working for insurance company, third-party administrator (“TPA”) or law firm. 3. Ability to work well with all levels of management and staff. 4. High degree of accuracy. 5. Effective time management and prioritization skills, with an ability to handle multiple competing priorities and associated stress/deadlines. 6. Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills (email, letters, in-person, etc.). 7. Ability to work independently. 8. High degree of independent decision making with moderate supervision. 9. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Preferred: 1. Two or more years of experience with contracts, insurance policies, corporate transactions, legal research and legal writing. 2. Two or more years of experience (litigated and non-litigated) with personal injury, insurance defense, or subrogation and third-party recovery (as health payer subrogator). 3. Managed care and HMO experience, including experience with medical claims and diagnosis/procedure coding.
