Safety and Occupational Health Specialist Duties: The candidate will ensure the organizations compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies. Administer Safety and Occupational Health programs including, Mishap Reporting, Respiratory Protection, Asbestos Control, Bloodborne Pathogens, Visitor Safety, and Quality Assurance. Oversee safety for administrative environments, facilities and logistic operations, animal care areas, and research and/or laboratory settings. Direct the organizations hazardous waste program, including radiological, chemical, and medical waste. Develop and issue policies and guidance for Location safety related efforts. Manage the organizations safety and health database.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: The candidate must have 1 year of specialized experience which includes: (1) managing safety programs for a medical research facility; (2) analyzing existing practices and procedures to reduce or eliminate hazards; (3) training employees on the application of good safety practices. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the Federal service (DJ-02/GS-09).
Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
