Patent Attorney The candidate will work on advancing the company’s IP portfolio around disease targets, biomarkers, analytics algorithms, drug discovery platforms, investigational compounds and clinical utility of various assets in Oncology and Neurology. Will closely monitor scientific programs, data and work product for inventiveness and patentability. Support the IP docket program. Work closely with external patent counsel to build and strengthen our patent portfolio. Perform patent prosecution; draft claims, patent applications and responses to office actions. Assist with filing office action responses and other prosecution tasks with the USPTO and foreign associates, while working with external patent counsel. Closely interact with engineers and scientists to understand and evaluate inventiveness and patentability of discoveries; attend R&D internal meetings. Be aware of public disclosure such as poster presentations, business meetings and or investor presentation. Perform due diligence, freedom to operate analyses, patentability assessments and patent searches. Docket review and analysis of incoming mail, docket and update records. Analyze and process incoming and outgoing correspondence. Enter new U.S. Provisional, Utility, Design, Continuation, CIP, Divisional, Opposition and re-examination files while closely working with external patent counsel. Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to case particulars or database anomalies. Discrepancy resolution includes file review with attorneys, outside counsel, researching public and private data resources. Perform IP legal research, as needed. Perform employee training on various aspects of patent law, good laboratory notebook practices and other relevant IP topics. Must have MS Degree (PhD preferred) in Biochemistry and/or Organic Chemistry with 4-8 years of relevant experience in a mid to large firm. In-house experience desirable. Must be admitted to the USPTO and registered to practice law in Massachusetts. Should have the ability to understand all the technical aspects associated with in vitro biology, in vivo pharmacology, drug discovery and medicinal chemistry. Strong technical writing and oral communication skills are required.
