Assistant Corporation Counsel I (Coal) Duties : Work in one of the three practice areas: Collections, Ownership, or Liens and Acquisitions. The Collections Unit is responsible for collecting debts due and owing to the City, working with outside law firms on collection matters, and creating policies and procedures to address the needs of the City Departments served by the Division. The Ownership Unit is responsible for preparing and reviewing title searches to determine property owners, responsible parties, and proper service of process in preparing for litigation for Municipal Code violations. Abstract, compile, and examine documents from public records and review chains of title to identify property owners and responsible parties, help develop and implement procedures and protocols, conduct law clerk training, and work on a variety of special projects. Assigned to the Liens Unit will primarily work on foreclosure of demolition liens, property tax litigation, and other foreclosure matters. Work under the general supervision of the Deputy, Chief, and Senior Counsel of the Division and assist in the counseling of various Client Departments.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification : The candidate should have Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree in or before June 2018 and admission to the Illinois Bar or eligibility to sit for the July 2018 Illinois Bar Examination (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705). Preference may be given to candidates possessing the following: Experience in determining real property ownership; Experience in reviewing and analyzing property deeds, mortgages, liens, and foreclosures; Experience in project management; and Experience in collections matters.
