Profile

Immigration Advocate
Duties: Under the supervision of the Senior and Staff Attorneys, assists clients with education, information, referrals and problem resolution, as well as conducts education and outreach to the community and other service providers. Conducts initial and follow-up interviews of applicants and clients in the office, on the phone and at outreach locations out of the office. Respond to calls from clients in a timely manner; assesses clients’ needs, schedules appointments, handles a large case load. Prepares forms and legal documents for the attorneys’ review. Does basic and routine factual investigation and legal research, gathers documentation. Prepares memorandums and letters. Helps prepare clients for USCIS interviews and immigration hearings. Develops and maintains good working relationships with a variety of government and social service agencies. Assists with community outreach and education events. Upon request of the attorney, perform additional duties consistent with abilities and need for services. Compliance with all program and grant requirements. Accurately enters required information on each case into the computerized case management database and maintains the confidentiality (integrity) of all information. Participates in scheduled team meetings, training sessions and other functions as appropriate. Maintains or increases substantive knowledge of immigration laws, policies, and procedures. Upon request by senior attorney or management, performs additional duties consistent with abilities.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: B.A. degree, or A.A. degree and paralegal certificate from a recognized paralegal training program, or demonstrated equivalent experience which shows strong writing, verbal, reading analytical, and research skills. Ability to gather and complete information from clients in a telephone interviewer in-person interview. Ability to respond to clients in a calm, empathetic and professional manner while courteously directing the conversation to the pertinent issues. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as support team efforts, and to strategize and plan so as to timely and consistently meet grant deliverables and reporting requirements. Ability to accurately keep time records and case notes. Must have reliable transportation. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills to handle individual caseload. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish preferred, but bilingual capabilities in other languages will be considered. Experience in the immigration law field. Experience as an advocate, including intake, interviews and research related to legal issues or experience in a related field. Experience in client customer service including intake, interviews and research related to legal issues, or experience in the field and understanding of related systems, laws and regulations. Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income people. Ability to work successfully with people from diverse backgrounds and all segments of the immigrant community, including being able to communicate clearly and effectively with those who may have cultural or language barriers, and those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities.
