Staff Attorney, Climate and Energy
The candidate will manage new and existing cases from start to finish, performing all aspects of litigation, including: drafting pleadings, motions and briefs; conducting discovery; presenting oral arguments; and handling appeals. Conduct factual investigations and develop legal theories for possible advocacy or litigation advancing the goals of our Climate and Energy work. Assist in growing the Northeast Office’s work in fostering an equitable pathway to swift cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. Serve as the office’s principal representative in Public Service Commission proceedings in Albany. Join other staff in long-term planning, strategy development, goal-setting, and work plan management that advances a collective vision for future Climate and Energy work, generally, and zero-emission advocacy, specifically. Participate actively in organizational and office efforts to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Supervise the work of Associate Attorneys, Law Clerks, and Litigation Assistants, who are part of the litigation team. Develop and manage relationships with co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners, including increasing the Northeast Office’s ties to overburdened and marginalized communities. Work effectively with other departments within firm, including Communications, Development, and Policy and Legislation. Must be admitted or willing to seek admission to the New York bar. Should have 7+ years of legal experience, including substantial experience with litigation and administrative proceedings. Experience in pre-trial and administrative proceedings (e.g., regulatory comments; preparation of fact and expert witnesses; motion practice); evidentiary hearings; and post-trial or post-hearing briefing. Experience in appellate litigation is a plus.
