Patent Counsel Duties: The candidate will manage outside counsel in the preparation of patent applications and international patent prosecution aligned to global business goals. Will collaborate in cross-functional development teams to find opportunities for innovation and build IP portfolio in new product development. Analyze and advise on the freedom to operate in new product development. Conduct IP diligence on emerging technology, new products, competitors, partnerships and strategic transactions. Review and advise businesses on confidentiality, material transfer agreements, and basic research agreements. Support IP litigation and other adversarial proceedings, such EPO Opposition and US IPR, as needed with legal team members. Provide educational presentations and other training on IP matters to associates. Specific assignments will depend on the interest, experience, and/or development plan of the associate and legal needs. Opportunities in other product lines and/or technologies may also be offered. Occasional domestic and international travel may be required to support business activities at sites in the US, Europe, and Asia.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry or other science or Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university. Admitted to practice before the USPTO. Must have 1+ year law firm and/or in-house intellectual property experience, active Bar membership in at least one US jurisdiction, and J.D. degree from an accredited law school. The desire for interactive practice with Intellectual Property and General Legal professionals to deliver high-quality and effective work products in a continuous growth and development environment. Experience and/or a willingness to develop a high level of competence in intellectual property law and an eye for business. Problem-solving through analytical skills, creativity, and collaboration with other associates. Ability to optimally adapt written and verbal communication for audience needs. Proven high integrity and ethics in all dealings, non-political in conduct, while understanding internal and external dynamics. Preferred Experience: Capability for direct US patent prosecution is preferred. Advanced degree(s) or validated experience in life sciences is preferred.
