Job Overview

A law firm seeks a skilled and experienced Domestic Estate Planning Associate to join its Private Client and Tax team in New York. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with high-net-worth clients on complex wealth structures, trust and estate administration, and tax planning while contributing to the team’s growth and business development initiatives.

Duties

  • Advise clients on a broad range of private client and trust/estate administration matters, including complex wealth structures and sophisticated estate planning strategies.
  • Draft, explain, recommend, and finalize comprehensive estate planning documents such as testamentary estate plans, irrevocable trusts, and leveraged gifting strategies.
  • Conduct detailed tax analyses involving estate, gift, GST, and income taxation of trusts and estates.
  • Prepare and review gift and estate tax returns and address related compliance issues.
  • Provide counsel on post-mortem planning, income tax planning using trusts (., QSBS planning), and estate administration.
  • Identify and advise on cross-border and/or income tax considerations, as applicable.
  • Engage in business development activities, including writing articles, attending events and conferences, and networking with private wealth contacts and intermediaries.
  • Contribute to the team’s profile through strategic collaboration and relationship building with peers, global counsel, and other professional organizations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience practicing in trusts and estates law or private client services within a law firm.
  • Expertise in domestic estate planning; international experience and/or income tax knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent research, drafting, and communication abilities.
  • Team-oriented mindset with meticulous attention to detail.

Education

  • A Juris Doctor (.) degree is required.
  • . in Taxation or Estate Planning is highly desirable.

Certifications

  • Admission to the New York State Bar is mandatory.

Skills

  • Proficiency in drafting complex legal documents related to estate planning.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, especially concerning taxation laws and regulations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication.
  • Business development acumen with an ability to build and maintain professional networks.
