ProfileStaff Attorney The candidate will, under the direction of the Manager of Recovery, provide legal representation on matters of first party debt collection. Will primarily engage in the litigation and collection of outstanding debts owed to credit union from default to post charge off recovery. Manage default legal matters including collections, foreclosure, bankruptcy, REO, title, and eviction issues. Effectively handle motion practice, attend hearings and conduct trials. Work with opposing counsel and pro se defendants to resolve disputes and negotiate settlement agreements. Develop litigation strategy and resolution of claims. Negotiate and draft settlement agreements. Work on special projects/research as needed.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have a J.D. degree and license to practice law in Michigan. Must have 1-3 years of similar or related experience, including preparatory experience. Prior litigation experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with Bar admission in both Michigan and Wisconsin are specifically encouraged to apply. Must be willing to travel throughout Michigan and Wisconsin on routine basis for court appearances and other purposes. Strong computer skills and/or experience with document management systems needed. Knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework affecting consumer collections including CFPB rules, the FDCPA and applicable state laws essential.
Note: This is a one-year appointment, renewal potential if supported by necessity and performance.
