Senior Associate General Counsel - Advocacy and Political Law Responsibilities: Ensure that conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws, standards, and practices, including federal and state campaign finance laws, lobbying disclosure requirements, gift and ethics rules, and tax laws governing exempt organizations, including the operation of 501©(3), 501©(4), and 527 organizations. Provide regular advice and counsel to staff on programs, and review advertisements, fundraising appeals, and other public messaging for compliance with the above. Oversee large portions of political law and compliance programs, including supervising compliance and reporting manager, and overseeing work of outside counsel. Draft and negotiate agreements, including grants and consulting agreements, particularly as relate to electoral programs. Provide counsel and manage projects to improve nonprofit operations, including working closely with finance and HR divisions to create efficient policies, procedures and training programs. Develop and deliver guidelines, trainings, and toolkits for staff and volunteers regarding lobbying and political campaign activities, intellectual property, nonprofit tax law, and other issues relevant to tax exempt organizations.
Qualification and ExperienceQualifications: JD Degree from an accredited U.S. law school. Admitted to practice in New York or Washington, D.C. 5+ years of legal experience and expertise in U.S. campaign finance laws and not-for-profit corporate and tax matters required. Experience as in-house counsel or as an attorney for a relevant regulator is a plus. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment. Ability to work collaboratively with program and operations teams. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to both partner with and provide strong guidance at all levels throughout the organization. Must be client-focused and provide excellent customer service.
