Law Student Volunteer - Fall 2018 The Office provides law students the opportunity to learn more about the criminal and juvenile justice systems by participating in the Internship Program as a volunteer. Will join the Trial Technology division. May assist attorneys in trial preparation, legal research, client interview sessions, discovery conferences, investigations, witness preparation, drafting pre-trial and post-trial motions, and motion hearings. Law students holding a 711 Qualification under Supreme Court Rule 711 may work in court under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney. Must be skilled in legal research, able to gather information from various sources, and proficient in summarizing research in a coherent manner. Must demonstrate an interest in working with indigent clients. Must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school or be a graduate of an accredited law school, preparing to take the Illinois Bar or awaiting Illinois Bar results, but not yet licensed as an Illinois attorney. Familiarity with various computer programs i.e. MS Office, Power Point, Excel, etc. relevant to the law Office of the Public Defender is desired. Strong writing and verbal communication skills are an asset. Strong bilingual verbal and written communication skills (Spanish, Polish, etc.) are a plus. The program is typically a 6-12 week assignment. Volunteers are assigned to work with specific attorneys and/or on specific projects. Students are expected to volunteer 12+ hours/week.
