Attorney Manager II, Special Litigation Duties: Responsible for the supervision of, and collaboration with, the Section’s attorneys, who are assigned to represent various clients in complex, protracted, or high profile actions. May include personal injury jury trials, medical malpractice cases, class action lawsuits in State and Federal Court, Civil Rights actions, and such other matters and complex litigation as may be from time to time assigned by the Department. Participation in, and review of, all appellate endeavors arising out of State and Federal practice, including the review and preliminary approval of appellate briefs for submission to office of the Solicitor General. As a part of the Section, will also represent the various State agencies and individuals who collectively constitute clients. Oversees the assignment and day to day management of senior attorneys assigned to most complex cases. Must know the abilities of those assigned attorneys in order to provide appropriate representation on behalf of clients. Balancing workloads, client needs, and available resources has become increasingly difficult and intricate. Responsible for the performance of the attorneys assigned to the Section, and is required to complete the necessary Performance Management System evaluations. Responsible for selecting, training and counseling the attorneys assigned to handle diverse and complex litigation. Responsible for the coordination, training, and supervision of the various support personnel who assist with the Section’s litigation endeavors.
Qualification and Experience
REQUIREMENTS: Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and 5 years of progressively responsible professional legal experience. must have thorough knowledge of the applicable Rules of Civil Procedure and trial practice in all North Carolina Courts, as well as all Federal Courts including the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. must be able to handle the most complex litigation and work with numerous heads of State Agencies as well as Division and Section heads throughout the Department of Justice. must be thoroughly knowledgeable of all of the Department’s policies and procedures. Must have extensive trial experience and have a thorough knowledge of procedures required for trials in federal and State courts. In addition, a high degree of knowledge of the interworkings of federal and State government is necessary and experience with such governmental operations is mandatory. Must be highly qualified as an administrator and capable of making impartial, fair and well-reasoned decisions in the management of personnel under his/her supervision. Must have the ability to communicate with subordinates, superiors, colleagues, clients, the general public and the press, and must be capable of and willing to enter into their duties in an energetic, dedicated fashion.
