Court Attorney - Family Law and Civil SHLA Centers
The candidate will be responsible for assisting the Senior Attorneys and the Senior Family Law Facilitator with the operation of the Court's Family Law and Civil Self-Help programs, and secondarily with the operation of the Civil Law Self-Help programs. Incumbent will also be responsible for the supervision of support staff and volunteers in the absence of the Senior Attorneys. Assists with the planning and implementing of programs for self represented litigants. Assists with the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures. Conducts workshops for self represented litigants. Develops, updates and provides educational materials to litigants. Interviews, assesses needs of, distributes necessary forms to litigants, and assists with the completion of these court and judicial council forms. Gathers information from litigants and utilize computer software to compute guideline child support. Oversees subordinate staff and volunteers. Identifies community resources related to self-help programs and community-based services for self-represented litigants. Provides referrals to other court-services and outside agencies. May conduct settlement and status conferences for self-represented litigants. Assists judicial officers in the preparation of orders, computations of child support, research on legal issues and other tasks as requested by the judicial officers. Incumbent receives general direction from the supervising Senior Attorney, Senior Facilitator and General Counsel. Incumbents are expected to work autonomously following general guidelines within a broad range of policies and procedures. Incumbent may supervise other staff, including volunteers. Requires the exercise of good judgment to choose among possible actions often without clear precedent, and to be able to distinguish between providing neutral legal information versus legal advocacy/advice in order to preserve the impartiality of the court. Must have graduated from an accredited law school and be licensed by the State Bar of California. Should have 3+ years of full time law practice with emphasis on either (a) all aspects of Family Law proceedings including Domestic Violence, or (b ) a range of Civil Law proceedings such as Eviction, Step-Parent and Adult Adoption, Civil Harassment Restraining Orders, Collection Defense, Judgment Enforcement, Guardianships and Conservatorships, and Name and Gender Change.
