The Bar Counsel directs the work of the Professional Regulation Department of the VSB, charged with enforcing the disciplinary and unauthorized practice of law rules by the Supreme Court of Virginia, training and educating members of the bar, and recommending improvements to the disciplinary system. The VSB is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia, which pursuant to statute and rule of court regulates the practice of law in the Commonwealth. The Bar Counsel reports to the VSB’s Executive Director and Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline, which has oversight responsibility for the disciplinary system. As chief prosecutor of attorney disciplinary complaints, this position maintains an active caseload, while managing a budget and supervising a team of investigators, lawyers, and support staff. This position closely monitors and guides the work of assistant bar counsel to ensure the timely and effective investigation, processing, and handling of cases in accordance with departmental policies and standards. Bar Counsel also serves as principal spokesperson for the bar on general professional regulation activities and specific disciplinary issues with journalists, member of the public, and bar members. This position advises bar committees on matters affecting the delivery of professional regulation services and recommends improvements to the disciplinary system; develops and presents CLE courses for various groups; and represents the bar in national presentations. Minimum Qualifications The position requires significant experience as an attorney litigating complex cases, preferably with private practice in Virginia, and successful experience managing other attorneys in litigating complex cases. Applicants must demonstrate a passion for public service and superior leadership, interpersonal, verbal, writing, organization, and presentation skills to effectively mentor and coach staff; delegate assignments; foster collaborative relationships; and communicate effectively with diverse groups. Required qualifications also include budget development and management experience; computer skills and some knowledge of emerging technologies; and the ability to work with a high degree of confidentiality, under pressure, and within tight deadlines. Preferred Qualifications Special Requirements Applicants must have a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar with no disciplinary sanctions. The successful candidate must also pass criminal and credit background checks prior to selection. The anticipated start date for employment is March 2019.
