Legal Assistant The candidate work involves providing legal assistance to ensure the smooth operation of the office and providing effective case management. Provides administrative support to attorneys in the office on a broad spectrum of legal areas. Duties involve to, drafting basic correspondence, pleadings, and other documents for attorney review and signature; maintaining file information within the established office filing system, in both hard copy and electronic format; filing documents with a variety of Courts, ensuring that Court forms are accurate and completed in a timely manner; assisting in preparation for various legal proceedings, including hearings and trials; acquiring and updating professional skills and knowledge through participation in training, education, and other professional development opportunities; efficiently managing multiple projects; scheduling appointments and hearing dates; maintaining attorney calendars; transcribing and typing from electronic dictation, hand written notes, and verbal instructions, as well as assembling and photocopying general office documents such as correspondence and agenda items, as well as legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, contracts, notices, motions, memoranda of law, briefs, and other pleadings, under specific office and court-imposed rules and procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Work involves the application of standard office, County, and court practices, policies, and procedures, and the employee must put forth the effort to remain up to date on same, as well as any word processing and computer applications and features that will assist in the efficient performance of the position's duties. This position acts within the scope of stated office, County, and court procedures. Must exercise some independent judgment in knowing when an inquiry requires a response from an attorney and when the employee may respond to an inquiry. Assignments are usually made with deadlines provided. Internal And External Customer Contact: Considerable internal and external customer contact is required to answer telephone calls, discuss ongoing issues, provide information, stay up to date on the assigned attorney's work, and scheduling meetings. Work will require courteous and effective interactions with the public, County staff, and outside law firm and Court personnel.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate requires graduation from an accredited community college with an AA or AS degree as a legal secretary or legal assistant, or a related field, and 2 years of legal secretarial/legal assistant experience; or graduation from high school or the equivalent thereto, and 4 years of progressively responsible secretarial/administrative assistant experience, two of which must be legal secretary/legal assistant experience. 2 years of legal secretary/legal assistant experience is required for this position. Should have knowledge of the court systems and filing procedures with various court clerk's offices and judge's offices, as well as general legal office procedures, and the ability to determine when and how each applies to the preparation and filing of documents. Ability: Ability to perform legal and general clerical duties efficiently and accurately. Proficiency in the operation of computer software in a Windows environment. Ability to organize and prioritize assignments and meet deadlines. Ability to follow through on assignments with attention to detail. Demonstrated problem solving, planning, critical thinking and priority-setting skills; ability to take direction and work independently with little or no supervision. Ability to manage files and records. Ability to type 70 cwpm. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other County staff, as well as outside law firm and Court personnel, both in person and over the telephone. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds. Extensive knowledge of business English, spelling, and punctuation. Ability to accept and complete assignments in a variety of formats, including via electronic dictation, handwritten notes, and verbal instructions.
